Innovazione e Cultura

(Good culture, healthy food and safe cosmetics for a better quality of life)

In the prestigious Italian National Research Council (CNR) in Rome has been held the World Congress Wellness and Beauty Outside in: East and West working together organized from International Society of Cosmetic Dermatology.
The concept of quality of life (QoL) was the key of lecture of the meeting during which it was tried to clarify the different way of living between East & West communities.
Many were the topics discussed from scientists coming from Academia and Industry from 8 European countries as Portugal, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, UK, Poland and Norway together with Italy, Israel and USA for West and China, Japan, and Indonesia for the East.
According with the WHO “QoL is, in fact, an individual’s perception of their position in life, in the contest of culture and value systems, in which they live and in relation to their personal expectations, family relationships and leisure”.
Thus, during the 3 days –Congress the influence the Environment, Food and Cosmetics have on the skin and our whole body, was shown.
It was considered the impact REACH will have on the European Chemical Industry and consequentially on the environment and human health; advance in nanoscience was explored to know how these new technologies might affect cosmetic Dermatology.
Efficacy claims on cosmetic and the methods substantiating them were reported and discussed focusing the different definitions of cosmetic, drug and medical device, with the aim not only to know the rules governing the marketing of health and wellbeing products, but to better understand the effect of this definition in the patentability of products also.
In fact, evaluation of efficacy and safety of cosmetic products is a constant for dermatologist, cosmetic chemist, other scientists and relevant regulatory bodies, but the intellectual property protection from the ever growing phenomenon of counterfeiting and piracy, became a must of industry worldwide.
The connection and relationship between skin, body and mind was reported during a special round table discussing the NICE concept in which the Nervous, Immune, Cutaneous and Endocrine systems work together to activate the skin-physiology by the secretion of specific messenger compounds.
The benefiting actions of a well balanced Italian or Chinese food to produce health effects through its functional components were reported by not only high level papers, but giving also the possibility to all the attendants to taste special food, wine and coffee coming from Regione Lazio, specially from the cities of Aprilia, Rome and Veroli.
Finally culture was highlighted by the Welcome Ceremony held into the famous Protomoteca of Campidoglio followed by a visit to Musei Capitolini where together with the statue of Marcus Aurelius was possible to admire the other famous statues and bas-reliefs of different periods of the Rome history.
Attractiveness and an healthy status is often the first reason the people put forward to explain they desire to look younger.
In our society, youth represents life and future, but a better quality of life become a must worldwide.
Looking this axiom the Congress focused the attention of all the participating scientists providing them with all the new ingredients and new products available today from the West and East.
Looking to what Environment Cosmetic, and Food Science might be like in the future, will be the theme of the next meeting that will be held in Shenyang, China on 2011.

IPhone challenge to Kindle as book apps surge

The iPhone may take market share from the Amazon Kindle, following an explosion in the supply of book apps last month, according to a report by San Francisco-based mobile application analytics company Flurry.
The number of book apps supplied to the iPhone App Store overtook the number of games apps for the first time in September, Flurry reported.
Between August 2008 and August 2009, most of the apps released were in the games category. But in October, one out of every five new apps launching in the iPhone was a book. “During the month of August, 1% of the entire US population was already reading a book on iPhone. Now, with books shipping in droves, we are seeing the supply-side explode,” Flurry stated.
The company concluded: “The sharp rise in e-book activity on the iPhone indicates that Apple is positioned to take market share from the Amazon Kindle as it did from the Nintendo DS.”
Last week The Bookseller revealed that slow-moving publishers could be left out of the “explosion” in demand for the creation of book applications for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. Adam Martin, head of the interactive department at United Agents, said apps were a “game-changer” for authors and publishers. He warned that publishers needed to move “within the next six months”. “If they are slow, they may get left out,” he said.
